A Focus on The Aussie Grit Apparel Focus Jacket

Posted by on

Lightweight and comfortable, and exceeding all mandatory gear requirements for major races, the Aussie Grit Apparel Focus Jacket is any outdoor enthusiast’s staple piece of kit.

Designed based on consumer requests for something different to what was already available, since its initial release in 2019 the Focus Jacket has received multiple awards for its functional design, and praise from athletes globally.

Let’s focus on the details.

The Fabric

Most running jackets are made from a woven fabric outer which can make them noisy and rigid.

Crafted with an ultra-light weight 2.5 Layer fabric, the Focus Jacket is different.

The fabric layers consist of:

  • The outer layer - an ultra-fine gauge knit which is soft, stretchy and quiet; it moves with you. A DWR treatment on the surface helps reduce rain absorbing into the fabric, plus the internal seams are covered with waterproof seam sealing tape which prevents rain soaking through them.
  • The inner layer – A polyurethane coating, is both 20,000mm waterproof and 20,000 g/sq breathable. This means it stands up to inclement weather while warm perspiration can escape.
  • A third .5 of a layer – A unique non-stick topographic print which partially covers the PU coating added to the inside of the fabric to reduce the garment sticking to sweaty skin.

The original colours were inspired by Australian nature – wattle yellow, forest night - a colour that works well in the native landscape, and jade coming from the colours in opals.

The 2020 model colours have a focus on visibility.

There is a standalone colour for both men and women, plus one colour that crosses over. This means that teams can match their kit. The women’s version has a drawstring at the waist, and the men’s has one at the hem.

All of the fabrics that we use are tested in labs and independently by us. We test warp and weft; how much the fabric stretches, the pilling, we test for snagging, water and vapour permeability.

To stand the test of the elements, we test the durability of the colour in sunlight and water.

In the development phase, we created the initial design and a prototype, then we tested it on the trails.

The prototype wasn't perfect so we made the hood peak firmer and strategically added underarm venting to release heat, but not allow water in.

We also added pleats into back to allow a pack to fit under it.

The New Focus 2020

We recently released the Focus 2020 Jacket which includes minor adjustments to improve fit and function, based on feedback from you, the consumer.

We made adjustments to further combat the wind and rain:

For the Focus 2020, we updated the zip to be a reverse coil, enabling any moisture to roll down front of zip instead of sitting on teeth.

We increased the length of the internal storm flap; it now runs the full length of the front zip. The storm flap works like an internal gutter – creating an additional barrier from the wind and rain should your wear your jacket partially unzipped.

Additional elastic down the sides of face and increased width of elastic at the sleeve give a snugger fit and reduce the chance of wind and rain getting in.

The original Focus Jacket and the Focus 2020 are extremely lightweight, with the men's medium weighing 250grams and women’s small just 215grams.

Customer Reviews

Original Focus Jacket:

“I bought this as soon as it came out, and absolutely love it! It’s really light, yet totally waterproof (I’ve been running in snow and rain since I bought it) and the Wattle colour is highly visible on dark evenings too. Thoroughly recommended.” – Andrew Baker

“Great jacket which feels super lightweight and complies with mandatory kit requirements for ultras. Worn it every day in the winter snow and felt warm and dry plus it packs down small when I wanted to stash it. Women’s fit really appreciated, as is the cool colour!” – Jude Palmer

Focus 2020:

"My Aussie Grit Apparel Focus jacket has been great the last few weeks. I normally hate running out in miserable weather but it’s so much easier with the right kit!” – Tom Radley
